Landscape Narrative ? Large USFS tract with extensive gated road system. Additional forest types in vicinity are oak-hickory, chestnut oak / mountain laurel.;Neutral aspect, upper slope cove on Hampshire shale formation. Acidic, sterile soils are silty but have residual chunks of sandstone, community is a forest dominated by medium size chestnut oaks, tulip trees, and red maple over a dense shrub layer of evergreen rhododendron ("Laurel Hell"). Rhododendron has deer browseline and rootsuckers, probably heavily used by deer in winter. Herb layer is sparse. Large rotted stump (not sawn) in plot. Rhododendron limbs are mostly reaching downslope.
